Goldwater Scholarship

goals and purpose

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by the United States Congress in 1986 in honor of Senator Barry M. Goldwater. Its goal is to foster and encourage excellence in science, mathematics, and engineering to ensure a continual source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research. Up to 300 scholarships are provided each year to college juniors and seniors. Each scholarship covers up to $7,500 per year of undergraduate tuition, fees, books and room and board.

duration

Goldwater Scholars in their junior year are granted two years of scholarship, seniors receive one year of funding.

eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply you must:
  • Be selected by the RIT Goldwater Faculty Representative and Committee
  • Be a full-time matriculated student of the College of Science or the College of Engineering who is planning one or two more years of undergraduate study at RIT beginning in the fall of the next academic year.
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • Be a citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Plan to have a research career in science, mathematics or engineering.

Applicants are divided into ‘state pools’. That means you compete with applicants residing (i.e. permanent residence) in the same state as you, not with students attending college in the same state.

B.S./M.S. candidates are eligible to apply provided the scholarship is used toward completing undergraduate degree requirements. Generally, the last year of a B.S./M.S. program is considered graduate coursework and does not qualify for the Goldwater Scholarship.
